Baptism of Light - baby blessing

On November 3, we held a Baptism of Light (Baby Blessing) for Violet Anna.

Dona Ho Lightsey, dear friend and Priestess-sister, officiated the Blessing.  As an ordained minister I look forward to officiating this rite for other families - it is a beautiful ceremony to offer.

We invited our guests to bring a blessing item as a keepsake or token to symbolize themselves for Violet.  My dad and stepmom brought an antique garden stake and they wrote the most beautiful message: "Dear Violet, as you grow may you spend many happy hours in a garden."  (Dad is a big-time gardener.)  A couple of people brought books to give to her - one of the women is a professional storyteller.  Many people gave her angel figures.  Mira gave her an OM pendant with the message "May you hear the sound of OM in all things".  Dona gave her a sandalwood Chinese fan, as she is Chinese and she is a very girly girl who loves girly things like fans.  I gave Violet my chakra bead birthing bracelet, a gift from my stepmother for my birth.  I wore that bracelet for 3 weeks leading up to labor, and while I was in labor that bracelet broke and the beads spilled everywhere!  I spent an hour of my labor re-stringing and re-wiring the bracelet wtih my jewelry tools (a good focusing tactic too).  When I presented the birth bracelet to Violet, I enclosed a piece of her umbilical cord within the locket that was toggled to the birthing bracelet.

Charlie and I presented Violet to everyone and Dona stated our intention that Violet is a child of light and that we desire to encourage and support her and her gifts as she grows.  We asked everyone present to agree to bear witness to her and to act as role models, mentors, supporters of Violet and her special gifts.  Dona then anointed each of Violet's chakras with Frankincense and Myrrh oils.

As Dona got to Violet's heart chakra, she touched her fingers to Violet's heart center and Violet lit up and expressed an unbridled baby giggle.  The people who were seated on that side of our livingroom were all tickled.

She truly is a blessing and a special light being.  We are enjoying every moment as it unfolds, as she discovers this life and the world around her.  It is my intention to share with her all of the special rites that mark the beautiful wheel of the natural year, rites of passage that honor her as a person and as a womon, and to enjoy and cherish her beautiful light.

What a lovely ceremony, and a beautiful way to welcome a girlchild into the wonderful world of women sharing a common respect for and love of the Divine Mother. Congratulations to mother and baby! It is terrific to think that she will learn from the beginning how powerful it is to be a woman, and that she will be honored as a daughter of the Goddess, not as a somehow "incomplete man."
Love and Light, Candace

I really feel honored to be parenting a gift of a girl in the world and I definitely feel responsible to show her the ways of the Mother. :)
